Learner Case Studies: Ollie Gomm

Ollie Gomm’s journey into the film and television industry exemplifies the transformative power of targeted training programs and the importance of accessible opportunities for aspiring professionals. Through his own words, Ollie shares how his experience in the Skills Bootcamp for Production Assistants offered by All Spring Media (ASM) paved the way for his successful career as a Base PA on a HETV Drama.

“I first discovered All Spring Media while searching through networking groups on Facebook, hoping to find opportunities in the film and television industry. The Production Assistant course immediately caught my attention as it was not only local, partnered with Sky Elstree and a chance to learn from industry professions, but best of all, free! It seemed like the perfect fit, so I applied without hesitation and was thrilled when I got accepted. From the very first day, I knew I was in the right place. The team was welcoming, and the atmosphere was filled with positive energy. I learned so much throughout the course, not just from the material but also from the people I met—others like me who were eager to break into the industry, as well as seasoned professionals who generously shared their expertise. One of the highlights was visiting Sky Studios Elstree, which was incredibly inspiring and motivating.

Upon completing the course, I was added to the All Spring Media talent pool and included in a WhatsApp group that regularly shared events and job opportunities. A couple of months later, I received a job application for a team assistant position at All Spring Media through this very group. I applied and was fortunate enough to get the job! The support I received during the course continued even after I joined the team. Although my contract was initially short-term, I was offered an extension, which provided stability while still allowing me to take on freelance opportunities within the industry. The role offered me the chance to pitch my own ideas and contribute to future courses being made. Thanks to the guidance and opportunities provided by All Spring Media, I was eventually able to secure my first High-End TV contract as a Base PA on ‘Call the Midwife, Season 14’.

Joining ‘CTM14’ as a Base PA in the AD department was a dream come true. On my first day, I was warmly welcomed by the team and received training from the previous Base PA, who had just finished working with the crew during the Christmas special. My responsibilities include creating cast signs, assigning trailers to actors, greeting them upon arrival, logging daily timings for the Assistant Directors’ report, and most importantly ensuring each actor gets through hair, makeup, and costume on time before transporting them to the set ready for filming. This role has not only fulfilled a long-held ambition but also opened the door to more opportunities in the future and it all started with ASM!”

Ollie Gomm’s story powerfully illustrates of how targeted, accessible training programs like the Skills Bootcamp for Production Assistants can provide a vital bridge between aspiring professionals and the opportunities they need to launch successful careers. His experience, shared in his own words, underscores the value of comprehensive training, a supportive network, and the willingness to seize new opportunities.

Ollie’s journey from a hopeful applicant to a Base Production Assistant on a renowned television series highlights the significant impact that All Spring Media has had on his career trajectory, demonstrating that with the right support and determination, ambitious professionals can achieve their dreams in the Tv and Film industry.
